I know it’s hard to believe but I was searching for the title and artist of this track for more than 10 years now. It’s almost exactly 10 years ago now that I heard this great song for the first time. I used to call this the “The Sad Love Song” and I finally found out who owns this smooth deep voice behind this wonderful rhythm and blues song.
Barbara Lewis is an American singer and song writer which was born in 1943 and influenced rhythm and blues with her smooth voice. The Michigan native had been writing songs since the age of nine, and began recording as a teenager. Lewis wrote all her songs on the debut LP including “Hello Stranger” which made it up to number 3. Because of a lack of commercial success at the end of the 60th she began to withdraw from the music industry. For the next decades a number of artists had great success with cover versions of her songs. At least in 1999 she received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
So, big thanks to my iPhone and the the music App Shazam. It’s strange that by all the tracks she had recorded and sung, this one – Break Away – is not really listed as one of her big hits. Hard to believe as this is a great “Sad Love Song”.
